World Athletics sets 2027 championship entry standards

World Athletics has officially set the entry standards for the 2027 World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Beijing, China, from September 11-19, 2027. The governing body outlined a multi-faceted qualification system designed to ensure elite performances at the event.

Athletes will have four primary pathways to qualify for the championships. They can achieve the required entry standard during the qualification period, secure a strong finishing position at designated competitions, receive a wild card, or earn a spot through their world rankings at the end of the relevant period. This system aims to reflect the increasing competitiveness expected at the global event.

The qualification windows vary by discipline. Marathon runners have from November 3, 2025, to May 2, 2027, to meet their marks. For 10,000m, race walks, combined events, and relays, the window is from February 23, 2026, to August 2, 2027. All other disciplines have a qualification period from August 23, 2026, to August 22, 2027.

Stiff requirements have been set across all events. For example, male sprinters need to run the 100m in 9.95s and the 200m in 20.07s, while women must achieve 10.96s and 22.45s, respectively. Middle-distance runners face targets of 3:30.00 for men's 1500m and 3:58.00 for women's. Field athletes also face challenging benchmarks, such as a 2.30m high jump for men and an 8.25m long jump. The overall system aims for approximately 40 percent of athletes to qualify via entry standards and 60 percent via world rankings, with performances primarily needing to be achieved at category C competitions or higher.

Under the approved system, athletes in individual events will be able to qualify in four ways: by achieving the entry standard during the qualification period; by virtue of finishing position at designated competitions; through a wild card; or by world rankings position at the end of the respective ranking period.
