World Bank and IDB Offer $700,000 to Aid Colombia After Earthquake

Colombia is receiving $700,000 in international aid from the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to address the crisis caused by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck the central and western regions of the country. The aid aims to support relief and recovery efforts in the aftermath of the seismic event.

Colombian Vice President José Manuel Restrepo announced the donations, detailing that the World Bank has allocated $200,000 in non-reimbursable cooperation for damage assessment. Additionally, the IDB is providing $500,000 in non-reimbursable technical cooperation. Of the IDB's contribution, $350,000 will be immediately accessible to the Red Cross, with the remaining $150,000 designated for technical support.

These funds are crucial for the ongoing response efforts, particularly in the departments of Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Chocó, and Caldas, which were significantly affected by the earthquake. The aid package from the World Bank and IDB adds to a previous humanitarian donation of $500,000 from CAF (Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean).

The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.4 according to the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), occurred at 7:34 AM local time with its epicenter in San José del Palmar, Chocó, at a depth of 103 kilometers. The tremor caused widespread damage across the central and western parts of the nation.

Initial reports indicate that the earthquake has resulted in 132 fatalities, 570 injuries, and damage to over 1,500 homes, underscoring the urgent need for the international assistance being provided.
