World Bank Group Invests $25 Million in Jumia to Expand Africa’s Digital Commerce

The World Bank Group is injecting $25 million into Jumia, a prominent e-commerce platform in Africa, to bolster digital payments and expand its reach across eight key markets on the continent. This significant investment signals a commitment to fostering digital commerce and financial inclusion within Africa's rapidly growing digital economy.

The funding is earmarked to strengthen Jumia's digital payment infrastructure, a critical component for facilitating online transactions and broadening access to financial services for underserved populations. The initiative also aims to directly impact job creation and economic empowerment, with targets set to support 60,000 sellers, generate 1,800 direct employment opportunities, and enlist 100,000 sales agents to drive commerce in local communities.

Jumia, often referred to as Africa's Amazon, has been a pioneer in establishing and scaling e-commerce operations across the continent. This partnership with the World Bank Group is expected to accelerate its growth trajectory, enabling it to overcome logistical and payment challenges that have historically hindered the expansion of online retail in many African nations.
