World Cup 2026: Congo beats Uzbekistan to reach knockout stage for first time

The Democratic Republic of Congo has made history by reaching the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time. They secured their spot with a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in their final Group K match.

Despite conceding an early goal in the 10th minute, the Congolese team rallied in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals. Yoann Wissa netted a brace, and Fiston Mayele added another, securing the crucial win. Uzbekistan's sole goal came from striker Eldor Shomurodov.

For Uzbekistan, their World Cup debut ended in disappointment. They lost all three of their group stage matches, finishing at the bottom of Group K with zero points. Their earlier results included a 1-3 loss to Colombia and a heavy 0-5 defeat against Portugal.

In the other Group K match, Colombia and Portugal played to a goalless draw. Colombia topped the group with seven points, with Portugal securing second place with five. Congo's victory propelled them to third place with four points, earning them a coveted spot in the round of 16. They are set to face England in their next match, while Colombia will play Ghana, and Portugal will meet Croatia.
