World Cup 2026: Switzerland denies Canada top spot in Group B

Switzerland spoiled the party for co-host Canada, defeating them 2-1 in Vancouver to claim the top spot in Group B of the World Cup.

The Swiss, known as "La Nati," secured the victory with goals from substitutes Ruben Vargas in the 47th minute and Johan Manzambi in the 57th. Both players had also been decisive in Switzerland's previous win against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Canada managed to pull a goal back in the 76th minute through Promise David, who had just entered the match as a substitute. Despite late pressure and numerous balls into the box, the Canadian team could not find an equalizer against Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kubel and his defense.

This defeat means Canada will not only finish second in the group but will also have to play their next round match in Los Angeles, rather than in Vancouver. This is a significant consequence for the Canucks, who would have played closer to home had they secured first place.

Meanwhile, in the same group, Bosnia-Herzegovina secured third place with a 3-1 victory over Qatar. This win is expected to be enough for Bosnia to advance to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.
