World Cup: Merino's late winner sends Spain past Belgium into semi-finals

Spain secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Belgium on Friday, earning a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals. Mikel Merino's late goal in the 88th minute sealed the win, extending Spain's national-record unbeaten run to 36 matches.

The semi-final clash will pit Spain against France in Dallas on July 14. Merino, an Arsenal midfielder, proved to be Spain's hero once again, scoring the decisive goal after Belgium's substitute goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, fumbled a routine effort. Lammens had replaced the injured Thibaut Courtois shortly before the incident.

His remarkable run of 649 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal at the World Cup ended, surpassing the previous record held by Italy's Walter Zenga.
