World Cup: NFL star's son Freeman scores first career goal in Seattle, calls it 'perfect family moment'

Alex Freeman, a young talent on the U.S. team and son of former NFL star Antonio Freeman, celebrated a career milestone by scoring his first World Cup goal. The 21-year-old midfielder netted the decisive goal in the 43rd minute during the U.S.'s 2-0 victory over Australia in their World Cup group stage match.

The goal came from a header following a blocked shot by teammate Sergino Dest. Initially flagged for offside, the goal was later validated after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, extending the U.S. team's lead to 2-0. Freeman admitted to feeling intense anxiety during the review, stating, "I was very anxious, constantly watching to see if the goal would count. When it was confirmed, I saw my teammates rushing towards me, and I thought, 'Oh my god.' That moment was truly moving."

Freeman, who is one of the youngest players on the U.S. squad, made his senior national team debut last year. His strong performances in Major League Soccer (MLS) for Orlando City earned him a spot on the national team and a subsequent transfer to Spanish club Villarreal. He has established himself as the starting right-back.

His father, Antonio Freeman, was a prominent NFL player who helped the Green Bay Packers win Super Bowl XXXI in 1997. The elder Freeman also had a notable performance in Seattle the year before, scoring two touchdowns against the Seahawks. Alex reflected on the significance of his achievement, calling it "a perfect family moment" that showcases "our family's excellent genes." He added, "He could excel in his field, and I can show greatness in my own way. It's wonderful to have such a successful father beside me to guide me and prepare me for these key moments."
