World Cup success draws more visitors to Cape Verde

The wind is the first constant companion in Cape Verde. Arriving on São Vicente, visitors feel the Atlantic trade winds sweep through Mindelo, where a strong breeze in the tropical heat quickly becomes a welcome relief.

The island nation’s World Cup success has sent travel searches soaring, but its most striking experiences lie beyond the hotel complexes. The journey leads instead toward stark volcanic landscapes, evocative music and Creole food made with local produce.

In Mindelo, the wind follows visitors through streets lined with colorful houses and crossings painted in rainbow colors. The city serves as the cultural center of the northern islands, a character reflected in its abundant street art.

The murals portray freedom fighters, boxers and poets, as well as football. One wall shows national-team goalkeeper Vozinha diving toward a trophy. Beneath the image, the words “Nosso sonho”, meaning “Our dream”, capture the football hopes painted into the city.
