World Cup winners to receive US-style championship rings, FIFA says

FIFA is introducing championship rings for the World Cup winners, a significant departure from tradition that aligns with the governing body's increasing integration of North American sports elements into its premier event. In addition to the coveted trophy and gold medals, the victors of the final match will receive these bespoke rings, a practice long established in leagues like the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, and NHL.

FIFA confirmed that 30 rings will be presented to the winning team, with the captain and head coach receiving temporary versions immediately after the game. These will later be customized to reflect the champions' identity and fitted individually. The design will feature the World Cup trophy on one side and unique details of the winning team on the other. This initiative extends to fans, as 2,026 limited edition, individually numbered rings will be produced, with the remaining 1,996 available for public sale as officially licensed merchandise.

The introduction of championship rings is the latest in a series of changes aimed at reshaping the World Cup in the image of American sports. The tournament has already incorporated a major halftime entertainment show, reminiscent of the Super Bowl, and implemented mandatory hydration breaks. These breaks, occurring around the 22nd and 67th minutes regardless of necessity, have been defended by FIFA on player welfare grounds during the hot North American summer.
