World's best BBQ masters head to Velika Gorica for international competition

The town of Velika Gorica, near Zagreb, will host the first Croatian competition in American BBQ, titled "No smoke, no glory," from July 10 to 12. This event will bring together barbecue teams from eight countries, showcasing the art of American-style grilling. Among the participants is Brad Leighninger, a three-time world champion from the United States, who will compete against 20 teams from Croatia, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Lithuania, Belgium, and England. A panel of 25 international judges will evaluate the competitors. The Croatian competition is one of a select few globally that qualifies for the BBQ World Cup, offering a pathway to compete for a million dollars in Las Vegas in 2027. The Croatian team "BBQ Hot Yard" is notably successful, currently ranked first in Europe and ninth worldwide in the Team of the Year standings. Attendees can expect a variety of attractions beyond the competition, including culinary shows, workshops, and tasting sessions featuring premium meats. A diverse range of food trucks will offer culinary delights, complemented by a full day of musical performances. Admission to the festival is free for all visitors. The competition strictly prohibits the use of gas and electric grills; all teams must use their own equipment, such as smokers, kettles, or kamado grills. The preparation of meat can take up to 24 hours and must adhere to specific categories: chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder, and brisket, the most challenging cut.

For the first edition of the Croatian competition, 20 teams from Croatia, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Lithuania, Belgium, England, and the USA have registered, who will be judged by 25 international judges. Among the competitors is American Brad Leighninger - Gettin’ Basted - a three-time world champion in the last five years. It is important to note that the Croatian competition is one of the few selected worldwide to become a qualifier for the BBQ World Cup, i.e., the fight for a million dollars in Las Vegas in 2027.
