World's First mRNA Flu Vaccine Launched, Offers 26% Higher Protection

The era of mRNA technology in flu vaccines has officially begun with Moderna's groundbreaking mFlusiva receiving U.S. FDA approval. This marks the first time mRNA technology is being used for a seasonal flu vaccine, offering a significant leap in protection for adults aged 50 and above.

Large-scale clinical trials involving over 40,000 adults demonstrated that mFlusiva provides 26.6% greater protection than existing standard flu vaccines. For individuals aged 65 and older, studies also showed a superior antibody response compared to Sanofi's high-dose flu vaccine. The FDA granted accelerated approval for this age group, pending further research on clinical benefits.

A key advantage of mRNA technology lies in its rapid adaptability. Unlike traditional flu vaccines cultured in eggs, mRNA vaccines instruct the body's own cells to produce flu antigens, stimulating an immune response. This platform allows for quicker updates to vaccine formulas, enabling faster responses to evolving flu virus strains and reducing development and production times.

Despite the promising results, the FDA requires Moderna to complete confirmatory studies for the 65 and older demographic. Analysts predict that due to missing the 2026 U.S. flu vaccine procurement cycle, mFlusiva's significant market impact may not be realized until the latter half of 2027.
