Wrong Highway Exit? Re-enter Within 15 Minutes for Basic Toll Fee Exemption

A welcome change is on the horizon for South Korean drivers, addressing a common frustration with highway tolls. Starting this October, motorists who inadvertently take the wrong exit on a highway will no longer face the double burden of paying the basic toll fee twice, provided they re-enter the same toll plaza within a 15-minute window. This practical adjustment, announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, acknowledges the occasional human error in navigation and seeks to alleviate unnecessary financial strain on drivers.

Currently, the highway toll system comprises a basic fee, approximately 900 won, and a distance-based charge. The previous system meant that even a brief, mistaken exit resulted in the forfeiture of the initial basic toll, requiring a new one to be paid upon re-entry. This new policy, applicable to electronic toll payments on national highways managed by the Ministry and the Korea Expressway Corporation, will allow for the remission of the basic toll for such instances, up to three times per vehicle annually. This is a significant improvement, as statistics suggest that around 90.2% of re-entry vehicles fall within this three-time limit, meaning the vast majority of drivers will benefit from this change.
