WTT Challenge: Kuo Kuan-Hung Advances to Round of 16 After Defeating German Star Franziska

Seventeen-year-old Taiwanese table tennis prodigy Kuo Kuan-Hung has advanced to the round of 16 in the men's singles at the 2026 WTT Feeder Ljubljana. He achieved this by defeating world No. 15 Patrick Franziska of Germany in straight sets, marking his second consecutive win against the German star.

Kuo, currently ranked 55th in the world, had previously beaten Franziska in straight sets at the Doha Star Challenge in January. In their latest encounter, Kuo secured the first game 11-7, despite being tied at 7-7, by showcasing his backhand prowess and aggressive forehand serves. He continued his strong performance in the second game, winning 11-7 with effective defense that turned passive situations into offensive opportunities.

The third game saw Kuo rally from a 1-2 deficit to take a 5-2 lead, prompting a timeout from Franziska. Kuo then extended his lead with a 5-1 run, reaching match point at 10-3. Although Franziska saved three match points, Kuo ultimately clinched the victory 11-8 with a decisive backhand shot down the middle, securing his place in the next round.

Franziska has now lost to Kuo twice this year, both times in straight sets and within 22 minutes. Kuo expressed surprise at the ease of his victories, noting that Franziska seemed to struggle with his serves. Kuo also reflected on his previous comeback win against African champion Aruna Quadri, where he came back from two sets down, attributing his success to playing freely and aggressively.

In the round of 16, Kuo will face another German opponent, Patrick Franziska. Kuo previously competed against Franziska at the World Team Cup last month, where he staged a remarkable comeback from two sets down to win the crucial third point for Taiwan. Meanwhile, Feng Yi-Hsin, ranked 42nd, was eliminated after losing to world No. 9 Dang Qiu.
