Wu Yi-li registers for Miaoli council race as Wang Wan-yu backs bid to retain New Power Party’s key seat

Wu Yi-li has stepped forward to defend what the New Power Party describes as its only remaining key seat on the Miaoli County Council. Party chair Wang Wan-yu accompanied Wu as she registered on Sept. 2 in the county’s fourth electoral district, which includes Zhunan, Houlong and Zaoqiao.

The party has worked in the district for eight years. It previously elected Sung Kuo-ting and Yeh Chung-lun to council seats. Yeh is now changing course and plans to run for Zhunan township mayor as an independent, leaving Wu to seek his place in the county legislature.

Wang said the party relies on local residents rather than political factions or vote brokers in Miaoli. She praised Wu’s experience as director of Yeh’s council office, a position Wu held for three years, and said Wu had moved from the front line of protests against the Kunyu landfill project into legislative service. Wang cited Wu’s saying, “Politics is not difficult, it just requires patience,” and called her the best candidate to continue the party’s oversight role.

Wu said she moved from Taipei to Miaoli after marriage and has lived there for 20 years, considering the county her home. During the past three years, she said, she worked on transport inspections, residents’ petitions and research into county government affairs. She framed her candidacy as an assumption of responsibility and presented “strong support for raising children, easier daily life” as her central message.

Her priorities include creating a more secure childcare environment, improving road safety, making daily life more convenient and giving young people better opportunities to build their futures locally. The New Power Party hopes her candidacy will allow it to continue its presence in Miaoli and retain one of the few council seats it holds nationwide.
