Xavi accepts Netherlands coaching role, calls it 'true honor'

He lightheartedly addressed being the federation's third choice, quipping, "It's not a bad position after Guardiola and Slot, is it? At least I'm on the podium." Xavi emphasized that the specific order of consideration did not matter to him.

Nigel de Jong, the Dutch football federation's (KNVB) elite football director, detailed the selection process. He stated that after the World Cup, the KNVB identified areas for improvement and outlined their desired direction. Pep Guardiola was their initial target, but he opted for a year-long sabbatical. Arne Slot, their second choice, chose to continue his club career despite being available after leaving Liverpool. De Jong affirmed that the federation respected Slot's decision, leading them to pursue Xavi.
