Xi Jinping Focuses on Central Asia and the Middle East Amid Global Shifts

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to embark on a significant tour from August 30 to September 3, attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and undertaking state visits to Kyrgyzstan and Egypt. This journey takes him from the heart of Asia to the Middle East, at a time when the war between the U.S. and Iran is reshaping regional geopolitical and energy dynamics.

In Bishkek, Xi will engage with other SCO leaders to discuss deepening cooperation and key international and regional challenges. The SCO, comprising China, Russia, India, Iran, Pakistan, and Central Asian states, serves as a primary multilateral platform for cooperation between Beijing, Moscow, and regional Asian powers. The summit occurs amidst heightened global tensions, including the Middle East conflict, trade disputes, and competition for influence across Asia.

Central Asia represents a strategically vital region for China, situated at the crossroads of China, Russia, Iran, and the rest of Central Asia. Beijing increasingly values its relationships with Central Asian nations for economic and strategic reasons. The region is crucial for infrastructure development, trade, energy resources, and transport routes connecting China with Europe and the Middle East. China has been strengthening ties through investments and infrastructure projects, positioning Central Asia as a key area for expanding its economic and diplomatic reach.

Xi's tour also unfolds against a backdrop of complex Sino-Russian relations. While the two nations maintain close cooperation, China pursues its own interests in Central Asia, a region traditionally dominated by Russian influence. Following Kyrgyzstan, Xi's visit to Egypt marks his first state visit there in a decade. Discussions with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi are expected to cover bilateral relations and shared international and regional concerns.

Egypt's strategic position in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly its control of the Suez Canal, a vital trade artery between Asia and Europe, underscores the diplomatic, economic, and commercial importance of this relationship for China. The visit signifies China's ongoing efforts to consolidate its global standing and influence.
