Yankees targeting star catcher, but trade hurdles loom large

The New York Yankees are making a concerted effort to bolster their catching corps, a position general manager Brian Cashman has identified as a primary concern. The team has been consistently linked with Ryan Jeffers, the starting catcher for the Minnesota Twins, since last month.

Adding to the Yankees' pursuit of catching talent, ESPN reporter Jorge Castillo revealed that the team had previously contacted the Colorado Rockies to gauge the availability of their star power-hitting catcher, Hunter Goodman. However, this inquiry reportedly occurred some time ago.

The Yankees' current catching situation is dire. Starting catcher Austin Wells is struggling significantly, with a batting line of just .155/.247/.258. Backup options Ali Sánchez and J.C. Escarra have also failed to impress.

Acquiring Jeffers hinges on the Twins' standing in the playoff race, as their willingness to trade him remains uncertain. Goodman, on the other hand, represents a more complex acquisition. He is a two-time Silver Slugger winner who hit 31 home runs last season and has already amassed 27 home runs in the first half of this season. Crucially, he is under team control for another three years, and the Rockies are historically reluctant to trade star players at their peak value, often preferring to extend their contracts. This suggests that acquiring Goodman would likely come at a substantial cost for the Yankees.
