Yazidi refugee fleeing ISIS now faces expulsion from France over radical Islam conversion

A 20-year-old Yazidi refugee, who found sanctuary in France after escaping persecution by ISIS in Iraq, is now facing expulsion proceedings. His case has drawn attention as he reportedly converted to radical Islam after arriving in the country.

The young man, identified by the pseudonym Agir, was born in Iraq's Sinjar district, the historical heartland of the Yazidi community. His family fled the region in August 2014 when ISIS launched a brutal offensive against the Yazidis, whom the extremist group labeled "devil worshippers." The persecution involved mass executions, kidnappings, sexual slavery, and forced conversions, acts for which European courts have since convicted ISIS members of genocide.

Agir arrived in France with his family in 2019. More recently, he was reportedly in Hamburg, Germany, on April 27, 2024, to participate in an Islamist demonstration. Reports indicate that between 1,000 and 2,000 people attended the rally, which featured banners with the slogan "Kalifat ist die Lösung" (The caliphate is the solution).

This individual's trajectory, from victim of extreme violence to alleged adherent of radical ideology, underscores the complex issue of extremism and proselytism within France. His story, unfolding in a small town in the Jura region, serves as a stark example of the challenges authorities face in managing radicalization, even among those who have sought refuge from persecution.
