Yellow Alert for heavy rains and hail in 9 Mexico City boroughs

Mexico City is bracing for heavy rainfall and potential hail as the Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) issued a Yellow Alert for nine of the capital's boroughs.

The alert is active for Saturday afternoon and evening, specifically targeting Azcapotzalco, Benito Juárez, Coyoacán, Cuauhtémoc, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztacalco, Iztapalapa, Tláhuac, and Venustiano Carranza. Forecasters predict rainfall accumulation between 15 and 29 millimeters, accompanied by the possibility of hailstones.

Authorities have recommended that residents carry umbrellas or raincoats and avoid discarding trash or grease into drainage systems. Keeping gutters clear is advised to minimize the risk of water accumulation and flooding. Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution due to potential debris on roads and the risk of submerged streets.

The SGIRPC also warned against walking through flooded areas and advised staying clear of structures like walls, trees, poles, and electrical cables that could pose a falling hazard during the storm. The period of concern is expected to last from 2:45 PM to 10:00 PM.
