Yellow alerts issued for strong winds, snow and Zonda across Argentina on Saturday

Argentina’s National Meteorological Service issued yellow alerts for strong winds, snowfall and Zonda conditions for Saturday, September 5. The agency said the weather could cause damage and temporarily disrupt daily activities.

The wind alert covers Salta, Jujuy, Catamarca, La Rioja, western San Juan, La Pampa, Río Negro and Chubut, as well as southern Buenos Aires province. Southerly winds are expected to reach 40 to 60 kilometers per hour, with gusts that could exceed 90.

Salta also faces a Zonda alert. In the area known as “La Linda,” winds could reach 30 to 50 kilometers per hour, with gusts above 70. The dry, warm wind can reduce visibility, cause a sudden rise in temperatures and create very dry conditions.

The snow alert covers southern Mendoza and Neuquén, where moderate to locally heavy snowfall could accumulate to between 15 and 30 centimeters. Westerly winds with gusts above 80 kilometers per hour could further reduce visibility by blowing snow.

The meteorological service advised people to avoid going outside when possible, secure objects such as flowerpots, chairs and awnings, and stay away from doors and windows. It also warned against sheltering under signs, trees or utility poles. For snow conditions, residents should use vehicles equipped for ice and snow, check roofs, gutters and drains, ventilate rooms to prevent carbon monoxide buildup, and keep food, drinking water and an emergency kit available.

In the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, the city is forecast to reach a low of 7°C and a high of 14°C, with a 40% chance of afternoon rain and gusts of up to 22 kilometers per hour. Buenos Aires province is expected to range from 8°C to 16°C, with isolated showers at night.
