Yemeni Forces Claim Strategic District as Houthi Clashes Intensify

Yemeni government forces have claimed the recapture of Hais district south of Hodeidah as fighting with Houthi forces intensifies across several fronts.

The district links Hodeidah, Taiz and Ibb provinces. Yemen’s military said it had retaken the area, while government forces continued strikes on Houthi positions in Taiz and Lahj. Military drones reportedly destroyed Houthi reinforcements south of al-Jarahi in coordination with a ground assault, and government forces said they captured dozens of Houthi fighters in fighting near the district.

Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi said Yemen’s armed forces could restore full control over the country’s territory. He warned that the Houthis “will bear the consequences” and said Taiz “will not be a corridor” for the group’s backers, referring to Iran. He added that the Houthis’ “miscalculations” would lead to their “complete collapse.”

The renewed fighting follows tit-for-tat attacks that began the previous week, including air raids and ground offensives. Yemen’s military spokesman, Colonel Majed al-Nozaili, said forces targeted a Houthi position in response to what he called the group’s violations and escalation. Al Jazeera reported powerful explosions in Taiz and said the Defence Ministry had deployed new weapons systems.

Civilians have paid a heavy price. More than 60 people, including civilians, were killed in clashes in Taiz on Saturday, AFP reported. Yemen’s state news agency said Houthi shelling of a civilian gathering on the road between Taiz and Aden killed four civilians and injured nine. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said about 1,800 families had been displaced over two days.
