YENİ Party Gaziantep MP Melih Meriç Hospitalized After Stabbing; Health Status Under Scrutiny

Melih Meriç, a Member of Parliament for the YENİ Party representing Gaziantep, is currently receiving intensive medical care following a stabbing incident. The attack occurred on August 18, and Meriç was initially treated at Gaziantep City Hospital.

Due to the severity of his condition, Meriç, who is 57 years old, was subsequently transferred via a special air ambulance to Istanbul. He has been admitted to the intensive care unit at Koç University Hospital, where he is reportedly intubated. His family requested the transfer, and medical professionals agreed it was necessary.

Melih Meriç was born in Gaziantep in 1968. He completed his primary and secondary education in the city and graduated from Istanbul Technical University's Sakarya Engineering Faculty with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1990. Before entering national politics, Meriç served as the chairman of the Gaziantep Chamber of Civil Engineers from 2012 to 2016.

Meriç has a history in politics, having been appointed as the CHP Gaziantep provincial chairman in January 2019, though he resigned from this position the following month. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Gaziantep in the 2023 general elections, securing the second spot on the ballot for the CHP. He has served as a member of the Interior Commission in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Meriç is married and has three children.
