Yongsan Fire Station Chief Indicted Without Detention Over Itaewon Tragedy

The Itaewon tragedy, a deeply scarring event for South Korea, continues to unfold in the legal arena. According to The Hankyoreh, the committee pointed to the fire chief's alleged departure from his post and delayed arrival at the scene, as well as the prolonged period without clear command after his arrival, which contributed to the chaos. Furthermore, the committee highlighted the absence of essential triage procedures for mass casualties, a critical lapse in emergency response protocols.

The investigation team's findings support these concerns, confirming that the Yongsan Fire Station chief was aware of the potential dangers posed by the large crowd but failed to take any action. His response after the incident, including rescue efforts, was also deemed untimely and insufficient. While the fire chief faces charges, the field commander has been cleared of charges.
