Yoon Suk Yeol reportedly asked convicted commander whether he believes in God

Former President Yoon Suk Yeol reportedly asked a convicted special forces commander whether he believed in God during a meeting at Seoul Detention Center.

Lawyer Kim Ji-mi said she encountered Yoon at the detention center in Uiwang, Gyeonggi province, after visiting Kim Hyun-tae, the former commander of the Army Special Warfare Command’s 707th Special Mission Battalion. Kim said Yoon greeted the lawyers warmly and asked, “Does Commander Kim Hyun-tae also believe in God?”

According to Kim, she replied that the commander had begun believing recently. Yoon responded positively, she said, and also conveyed a Bible verse intended for Kim. The lawyer added that Kim appeared deeply moved after receiving the passage.

Kim Hyun-tae was sentenced to 12 years in prison and detained in court after the Seoul Central District Court found him guilty of leading troops into the National Assembly during the Dec. 3 emergency martial law operation. The court criticized him for showing no remorse and for using YouTube channels to distort facts and attack people involved in the case.

The commander continued to reject the court’s assessment in a letter released the day after his sentencing, saying he considered himself to be on an overseas deployment and would leave prison healthier. Far-right YouTuber Jeon Han-gil, who has campaigned alongside Kim while promoting allegations of election fraud, said he would refer to Kim as a general rather than a colonel from the moment of his imprisonment.
