Young producer transforms family ranch with focus on genetics and data

At 27 years old, Martina Schirado is steering the family's Angus cattle ranch, Los Cinco Ombúes, towards a new era, blending traditional farming with a modern, data-driven approach. This year marked a significant step as she participated in the ExpoAngus 2026 at La Rural in Palermo, an event her father, Luis, who founded the ranch two decades ago, had never pursued.

Schirado explained that her father's focus was primarily on commercial production of bulls and steers, rather than exhibiting at major expos or delving deeply into genetics. "His goal was never to come to Palermo or other expos; nor was he so involved in genetics and data affinity, but rather it was more a commercial rodeo to produce a good bull and also a good steer."

Her involvement signifies a generational shift, with Schirado restructuring the team and aiming for growth. "Today, with this generational paradigm shift, we have restructured the team and now have a very strong and consolidated group, eager to grow. So that pushed us to try something new," she stated. This new direction emphasizes genetics and data analysis, a departure from the ranch's previous commercial focus.

Schirado's connection to the countryside began in her childhood. Although born in Buenos Aires, she spent much of her youth in Tandil, where she developed a deep appreciation for rural life. "When I was very little, my family moved to Tandil, and that's where my relationship with the rural environment began," she recalled. Her weekends were filled with horseback riding and exploring the sierras, fostering a love for nature and rurality that now informs her professional path.
