YouTube Channel 'Studio 3' Attracts Top Swedish Politicians for Heated Debates

A Swedish YouTube channel named "Studio 3," launched just a year ago by two 22-year-olds, has rapidly emerged as a significant platform for political debate, attracting top politicians and controversial opinion leaders. The channel's founders, Emil Widén and Simon Claesson, initially started with a humorous concept but quickly pivoted to political discussions, recognizing the potential for engagement.

"If you put the right people against each other, it will get a lot of views," says Emil Widén, one of the channel's creators. Their success stems from a format that often pits individuals against a larger group of opponents, a concept borrowed from the American YouTube channel Jubilee. This approach has led to "mega-viral" videos with millions of views across various platforms, covering topics such as police involvement in pride festivals, mass immigration, and taxation.

The channel has hosted prominent figures in Swedish politics, including Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M), Daniel Helldén (MP), Simona Mohamsson (L), and Tobias Andersson (SD), as well as youth representatives. Studio 3 also invites a range of debaters and commentators, such as Nick Alinia, Daniel Suhonen, and Gustav Kasselstrand, leader of Alternativ för Sverige, who recently debated 20 individuals described as being "from the left."

Widén and Claesson do not identify as journalists but state they strive for balance and have no political agenda. "We have neither a political background nor an agenda with what we do. We are primarily an entertainment channel," Claesson explained. They believe their success lies in inviting individuals from diverse points on the political spectrum, filling a perceived gap in political discourse where discussions can become overly contentious, as noted by a recent survey indicating many Swedes avoid political debates due to harsh conversational climates.
