Yugoslav Acting Star Neda Arnerić's Life Marked by Triumph and Tragedy

Yugoslav acting legend Neda Arnerić, who left an indelible mark on the Yugoslav film scene, passed away in 2020 at the age of 67. Had she been alive, she would have celebrated her birthday on July 15th.

Her lifeless body was discovered in her apartment in Vračar, Belgrade. Arnerić starred in over 100 films, beginning her career at just thirteen years old with the film 'San' (Dream). Her most famous role was as the young bride in the 1980 film 'Tko to tamo peva?' (Who's Singing Over There?).

Beyond her acting roles, Arnerić's private life also attracted public attention. She was married three times, finding her true happiness with Dr. Milorad Meštrović, with whom she spent nearly four decades. Meštrović passed away in early 2019, and a devastated Arnerić struggled to cope with his loss. Shortly after his death, she was hospitalized for an alleged suicide attempt, having taken over 20 tranquilizer pills. Her brother found her unconscious and called for emergency services.

Arnerić never became a mother, a fact she once regretted. However, in one of her last interviews, she expressed gratitude for not having descendants due to the unstable times. Her family, particularly her brother's children and grandchildren, were her greatest support, especially after a tragic fall from the third floor of her apartment building in 2016. The fall resulted in fractures to her fifth cervical and first lumbar vertebrae.

I am only aware of it now. I wasn't well, but I wasn't aware it was because of that emptiness I felt after his death, because of the broken habit that lasted 37 years. I was used to being with someone and having a leader, someone to guide me. I had three serious relationships and I always had to believe that my men were much stronger than me in every way. Because of that, I would surrender to them and they led me. Now suddenly there is no one to lead me and I am a little lost. But I guess I will get used to being alone. I have friends who are alone their whole lives and are well organized.
