Zagreb Advances Plans for 600 New Affordable Homes in Borovje

Zagreb is advancing a significant urban development project to construct 600 new affordable housing units in the Borovje neighborhood, a move that has generated considerable discussion, including in the City Assembly.

The project, aimed at addressing the city's housing crisis, is currently in a public consultation phase, which will last until July 22. Deputy Mayor Luka Korlaet highlighted that this initiative is part of a larger effort, with the city cumulatively building 1,000 affordable rental units. "Affordable rent is one of the tools against this crisis," Korlaet stated, emphasizing the importance of such measures.

During a City Assembly session, Suzana Dobrić from the Možemo party inquired about the progress of the Urban Development Plan for Borovje – South zone, which is intended to house approximately 1,700 new residents. Korlaet responded that the project, initiated 20 years ago with a competition, is finally progressing. He noted that while minimal changes have been made to the original plan, there will be separate tenders for individual buildings to ensure architectural quality.

Korlaet mentioned that the city is also addressing other urban issues, referencing a statement made regarding an inspectorate's visit to a construction site in Savska. The Borovje project aims to provide much-needed housing, with the city emphasizing a commitment to accessible living solutions.
