Zagreb completes most summer roadworks as key routes reopen

Zagreb has completed most of its major summer traffic works ahead of the new school year, reopening several important routes over the weekend.

The city renewed 1,848 metres of tram track on King Zvonimir Street, between Victims of Fascism Square and Heinzel Street. Workers also replaced the switch at the intersection with Pavla Šubića Street. Tram services will resume on the renovated section from the following day.

The stretch had not seen major work since 1996, while some sections of the track dated back to 1991. The city also completed work on the upper part of the overpass on Ljudevita Posavskog Street in Sesvete, which is reopening to traffic. Repairs covered both the upper and lower parts of the structure, although work on its underside will continue. The remaining work should not affect motor traffic and is expected to finish in early 2027.

The closure of the overpass also allowed the city to rebuild the junction with Zagrebačka Road. A new left-turn lane from Ljudevita Posavskog Street is expected to improve traffic flow toward the east and reduce congestion on the overpass.

Mayor Tomislav Tomašević said the city had completed more than 90% of its summer program. He described the work as covering dozens of roads and hundreds of kilometres of new roads, tram tracks and pipelines, carried out by city and private companies during periods of heat. Some projects remain. The largest is the reconstruction of Grada Vukovara Street between Trešnjevka Square and Florijana Andrašeca Street, which should finish later in September. Work on the Zagreb Avenue overpass over Selska Road is expected to continue through October.
