Zagreb Prepares for New Heatwave, Offers Free Cooling Centers This Weekend

As a new heatwave approaches, Zagreb is taking steps to help residents beat the heat. The city will offer free access to public swimming pools, museums, and libraries from Friday to Sunday. This initiative aims to provide accessible, air-conditioned spaces for cooling down.

Mayor Tomislav Tomašević announced that the city is preparing a formal decision to regulate how public institutions operate during heatwaves. "We want to provide citizens with as many cooling options as possible," he stated, encouraging residents to visit the available facilities. The pools Šalata, Iver, Utrine, and Jelkovec will be open, with Jelkovec reopening on Saturday after maintenance.

Several museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Archaeological Museum, and the Museum of Arts and Crafts, will offer free entry. City libraries across 42 locations will also be accessible, providing cool environments for reading and programs. Beyond these indoor options, Zagreb reminds residents of its nearly 200 public drinking fountains scattered throughout the city.
