Zagreb Prepares for Record-Breaking European Gymnastics Championships

Zagreb is set to become the center of European gymnastics as it hosts the European Championships for both men's and women's artistic gymnastics from August 13 to 23. The event, to be held at the Arena Zagreb, is poised to be the largest in the competition's history, with an expected 640 gymnasts from 43 nations participating. This championship will uniquely combine both senior and junior European Championships. Croatia's national teams are finalizing their preparations, with the women's team featuring Tina Zelčić, Tijana Korent, Mila Prpić, Christina Zwicker, and Erin Bakran. The men's team includes prominent names like Olympic medalists Tin Srbić and Filip Ude, alongside Aurel Benović, Illia Kovtun, Mateo Žugec, and Marko Jovičić. For young gymnast Erin Bakran, this championship represents a significant debut. "I am happy to have qualified for the European Championships in Zagreb, mostly because it will be my first competition of this kind and because it is being held in the city where I grew up and train," Bakran stated. "The opportunity to show what I have learned through years of work and perseverance means a lot to me, and I am looking forward to the whole experience that such a competition brings. My goal is to perform a stable and clean routine with as little stress as possible, and I hope for a good placement."

Marko Jovičić, preparing for his third senior European Championship, expressed his enthusiasm for the event being held in Croatia for the first time. "Preparations in Osijek are entering the final phase, and we have been training with the full national team for five days already," Jovičić said. "There are three weeks left until the European Championships, the training sessions are intensive, and we are doing two training sessions a day to be as prepared as possible for the competition. I am especially pleased that the European Championships will be held in Croatia for the first time. It is a great honor for me to be part of the national team and have the opportunity to represent my city and Croatia in front of the home crowd. I am sure that excellent organization and a great atmosphere await us."

The junior competition will see Niko Nevešćanin, Filip Perestegi, Lovre Šućur, Gabriel Solar, and Patrik Felinger represent the men's team, while Dora Žuljević, Lotta Kalinski, Nera Đurić, Eva Oštarčević, and Nola Žiković will compete in the women's category. Dr. sc. Marijo Možnik, President of the Croatian Gymnastics Federation and the Organizing Committee for the European Championships, invited the public to attend. "We are counting down the days until the start of the European Gymnastics Championships, which will be held in Croatia for the first time," Možnik said. "We have done a tremendous job, and I am sure that ten days of top-level gymnastics in a fantastic atmosphere await us.
