Zagreb Shelter Saved 1,300 Animal Lives in Six Months

The Dumovec animal shelter in Zagreb has reported saving approximately 1,300 animal lives in the first six months of the year, averaging seven rescues per day. These efforts encompassed a wide range of interventions, from assisting wild animals to providing care for abandoned domestic pets.

According to Tatjana Zajec, the shelter's manager, their field service responded to 1,300 interventions during this period. Over half of these calls involved wild animals, with the shelter taking in 600 such creatures. Simultaneously, 740 dogs and cats were housed at the shelter, and 430 were successfully rehomed.

Zajec emphasized the shelter's goal of minimizing the time animals spend in their care. "We provide them with shelter, food, water, veterinary care, and work with our caretakers, dog trainers, and volunteers to prepare them for a comfortable life with people," she stated, adding that they actively seek permanent homes for the animals.

The shelter also reported significant progress in its sterilization efforts. In the first half of the year, 220 dogs and 840 cats were sterilized. The majority of these were stray cats from Zagreb, with a smaller portion being dogs and cats available for adoption. Wild animals rescued by Dumovec are transferred to the Zagreb Zoo's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for care.
