Zamfara: Bandits abduct local govt chair, kill four securitymen

Residents of Bungudu Local Government Area in Zamfara State are mourning after suspected bandits killed four security personnel and abducted the council chairman, Nura Abdullahi, on Friday night. The assailants invaded Abdullahi's official residence around 11:40 p.m., taking him along with two other residents: Halliru Soja, a staff member at the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau, and Hussaini Naira, a POS operator. The gunmen killed four security officers attached to the chairman during the raid. The victims were identified as Inspector Basiru Lawal, police constable Hamza Muhammad, and two vigilantes, Nura ADC and Ibrahim Baare. Bello Abdullahi, a former treasurer in the state Ministry of Finance, was injured in the attack. Efforts to get an official comment from the Zamfara State Police spokesperson were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. Bungudu LGA, situated about 21 kilometers from the state capital, Gusau, is a frequent target for bandits involved in kidnappings for ransom and attacks on security outposts. The violence persists despite intensified counter-operations by security forces, including police actions that have resulted in the killing of bandits. Specialized police units have also detected and safely detonated improvised explosive devices planted by bandits along transport routes. The rural communities of Bungudu have faced repeated devastation, with bandits burning houses, killing residents, and destroying food storage, worsening the region's humanitarian and food security crises.
