Zapatero Scandal Confirms Opposition Claims on Chavismo Ties, Says Machado

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has asserted that the recent judicial scandal surrounding former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero validates years of opposition claims regarding his close relationship with the Chavista government and his involvement in Venezuela's political crisis.

In an interview with El Mundo, Machado expressed that many international corruption scandals ultimately connect back to Venezuela. She described the country's situation as tragic, stating its wealth, territory, and institutions have been surrendered to organized crime, leading to widespread hunger, poverty, and migration. Machado questioned Zapatero's past role as a "mediator," suggesting it masked deeper interests and complicities connected to the Venezuelan government.

Machado also revisited her strong criticism of the 2020 Venezuelan parliamentary elections, in which Zapatero participated as an international observer. She characterized the election as a process manipulated by the ruling party to legitimize the Chavista regime, asserting that it was designed to exclude the opposition and fabricate results. Machado argued that the perceived impunity enjoyed by various actors linked to Chavismo explains the scale of the scandals now emerging in both Venezuela and Spain.
