Zaventem protests for safe bike paths on Leuvensesteenweg: "It's life-threatening for cyclists here"

A broad coalition of Zaventem's municipal council, local associations, and businesses staged a protest on Leuvensesteenweg (N2), a key traffic artery, to demand urgent improvements to road safety, particularly for cyclists. The "coalition of the N2" initiative aims to draw attention to the dangerous conditions on the road.

Mobility Alderman Lukas Schillebeeckx emphasized that the N2's redesign has been a long-standing priority, with concerns about its poor state and lack of safety for non-motorized users repeatedly raised over the years. He described the Leuvensesteenweg as a crucial connection in the region, linking its sub-municipalities and experiencing significant traffic from the nearby airport.

De Leuvensesteenweg (N2) is 1 van de belangrijkste verkeersassen in onze regio, de enige die onze deelgemeenten verbindt. Bovendien krijgen we veel verkeer van de luchthaven erbij. Toch hebben fietsers enkel moordstrookjes en zelfs die ontbreken vaak.

"Cyclists only have death strips, and even those are often missing," Schillebeeckx stated, illustrating the perilous situation. The coalition is calling on Minister De Ridder to accelerate the planned projects along the N2 and provide a clear timeline for their implementation.

To bolster their demands, the municipality has launched a petition, urging residents to sign it to demonstrate the strong local backing for the road improvements. "It's time to make it clear that this really matters in Zaventem," the alderman added.
