Zelensky dismisses army chief after protests, appoints new commander

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed army chief Oleksandr Syrsky, a move described as "listening to the people" by correspondent Michiel Driebergen. This decision follows days of public demonstrations in Kyiv and other major Ukrainian cities, where citizens called for Syrsky's ouster.

Fedorov, who had been praised for recent successes against Russia, was reportedly dismissed due to conflicts with Syrsky over reform plans. Ukrainian media suggested Fedorov himself requested his dismissal due to difficulties working with Syrsky, a request Zelensky initially denied.

Zelensky stated his intention to work with Drapaty to "defeat the enemy and create the conditions – on the front line and by pressuring Russia – that would enable us to force Russia to peace." Driebergen anticipates a "new, fresh wind" in the military, with a focus on reforming the army and showing greater respect for soldiers.
