Zelenskyy appoints new Ukrainian military chief, differing from predecessor's rigid style

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed General Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new commander-in-chief of the armed forces, replacing Oleksandr Syrskyi in a significant military leadership shift. This decision comes amid widespread protests in major Ukrainian cities against the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who was known for driving reforms.

The public's anger has also extended to Syrskyi, who was rumored to have disagreements with Fedorov. The personnel change occurs as Ukraine attempts to gain an advantage by heavily targeting Russia's energy facilities and logistics networks. The removal of Fedorov, a proponent of reform, has sparked concerns among military analysts that Ukraine might lose its recent battlefield momentum.

Following his appointment, Zelenskyy emphasized the goal of defeating the enemy and creating favorable conditions on the front lines to maintain pressure on Russia and push for peace. He stressed that Drapatyi and other commanders must develop updated defense strategies, including continuing military reforms, accelerating weapon and drone deliveries, strengthening air defense against Russian airstrikes, and creating clearer mobilization plans.

General Drapatyi, 43, is considered one of Ukraine's most respected senior commanders. He is viewed by protesters, soldiers, and veterans as a suitable replacement for Syrskyi. Unlike Syrskyi's centralized command style, Drapatyi advocates for granting lower-level commanders more autonomy, speeding up decision-making, and enhancing accountability within the military.

Drapatyi expressed his honor in serving Ukraine during its fight for independence, acknowledging the absolute responsibility that comes with the role. He pledged to work responsibly and with focus, respecting those defending the nation. Drapatyi also thanked Syrskyi for his role in shaping his military career. Syrskyi, who had been in the top post since early 2024, faced criticism for a rigid command style that reportedly led to high troop losses.
