Zelenskyy calls meeting with US envoys substantive

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described his Sunday meeting with US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as “very substantive,” while warning that the war with Russia appeared likely to continue through the winter.

The talks covered security and economic guarantees for Ukraine, deliveries of air-defense missiles and a support package to help the country get through the winter. Zelenskyy also said he hoped negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the United States would soon resume.

“I remain convinced that such complex problems can only be resolved at the level of heads of state,” Zelenskyy said, according to AFP. He added that Ukraine hoped to reach agreements with its American partners and expected support from European partners if the war continued through the winter.

The visit to Kyiv marked Witkoff and Kushner’s first trip to the Ukrainian capital after they met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday. It was the eighth time during the war that the two envoys had visited Russia. They traveled to Kyiv by train on Sunday afternoon for the meeting.

Witkoff said after meeting the Ukrainian and Russian presidents that both countries would have to make compromises to end more than four years of full-scale war. “It is very difficult, but we are committed, we care, and we hope that all of this leads to a successful, peaceful diplomatic solution,” he said, according to AFP.
