'Zero tolerance': Katz bans Omri Ronen from IDF service following reserve duty refusal remarks

Defense Minister Israel Katz has issued an order barring social activist and IDF reservist Omri Ronen from further military service, citing Ronen's public statements about refusing reserve duty as a form of political protest. Katz declared a "zero tolerance" policy for refusal, stating his determination to "eradicate the phenomenon of refusal from the IDF." The order, formally communicated to IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, was prompted by Ronen's comments on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Katz's letter emphasized that Ronen's statement "effectively encourages refusal to serve and harms the IDF’s resilience." He asserted that individuals who publicly call for not reporting for duty or speak against military service have no place in reserve call-ups, as such actions undermine the IDF's values, cohesion, and operational readiness. The defense minister stressed that the military must remain apolitical and solely serve Israel's security interests, indicating this policy would extend to future similar cases.

Ronen responded sharply to Katz's decision, calling the minister "shameless" and accusing him of promoting draft evasion. Ronen, a leader in the Brothers and Sisters in Arms organization and a member of The Democrats Party, maintained that he and his colleagues are the "true servants of this country," implying that those in power are the ones causing harm. Ronen has been a prominent participant in protests against the government's judicial reform.
