Taiwanese folk religion expert Liao Da-yi has outlined the spiritual significance of the 'Earth God's' birthday, which falls on the Zhongyuan Festival this Thursday. The Earth God is one of the Three Officials, revered figures in Taoism who govern heaven, earth, and water. Specifically, the Earth God is tasked with overseeing the world of the living and is believed to have the power to grant forgiveness for sins.

According to Liao, the Earth God meticulously examines the merits and demerits of all beings. This celestial assessment makes his birthday a particularly auspicious time for individuals seeking to alleviate misfortunes, resolve difficulties, and improve their financial standing. The belief is that by appealing to the Earth God, people can find relief from their troubles.

Liao Da-yi advises that individuals experiencing specific hardships should prepare certain offerings to seek the Earth God's blessings. These include people whose family members are unwell, those who have recently suffered financial losses, such as from stock market investments, or individuals facing legal entanglements. By preparing four specific items, these individuals can petition the Earth God for disaster relief, absolution, and the replenishment of their wealth.
