Zurich School's Class Transfer Proposal Sparks Legal Battle with Parents

A legal battle is unfolding in a Zurich municipality after a secondary school student's persistent behavioral issues led to a proposed class transfer, which her parents are fighting in court. The conflict escalated after the 15-year-old student left class on May 15, 2025, reportedly to get a ruler, and did not return. She was later found in a restroom, claiming to have experienced a panic attack.

Three weeks later, the school's director ordered the student to be moved to a parallel class for her third year of secondary school. This decision marks the culmination of a two-year dispute. The student's difficulties began in early 2023, when she was placed in a "school island" for three days – a separate learning environment with one teacher – due to her behavior. Although her parents successfully opposed a second placement in the school island months later, the problems persisted when she entered secondary school. She was frequently late, forgot school supplies, neglected homework, used her phone without permission, defied dress codes, and slept during lessons.

The class teacher found her behavior "cheeky and disrespectful," especially her defiance of instructions. Despite numerous meetings involving parents, school social workers, and the administration, no improvement occurred. The parents were advised to seek psychological evaluation and family counseling, and the student received coaching. A neuropsychological assessment revealed the multilingual student has a mild language development disorder and dyslexia, affecting her reading and writing abilities.
