Zverev Wins in French Open Round of 16, Now Top Favorite

However, the German tennis star deflected questions about his elevated favorite status, stating his focus remains solely on his next opponent.

"I don't know how many more times I have to say it. I'm playing Frenkie de Jong – and I don't care about the rest," Zverev remarked, mistakenly naming the Dutch soccer player instead of his actual opponent, Jesper de Jong. He made these comments late at night, after his 6:4, 6:3, 5:7, 6:2 win in the third round.

Zverev's path to a potential Grand Slam title has opened up significantly due to a series of high-profile upsets at Roland Garros. Record Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic was eliminated, as was world number one Jannik Sinner, who suffered a physical collapse. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is also absent due to injury. With Zverev being the only top-five ranked player remaining, the door to his long-awaited first Grand Slam victory appears wide open.

Despite the favorable circumstances, Zverev reiterated his disciplined approach. "I have to concentrate on what I can influence – and that is my matches," he said. His next opponent, Jesper de Jong, is a "lucky loser" who failed to qualify but earned a spot in the main draw and has impressed with his performances.

This marks Zverev's ninth consecutive appearance in the round of 16 at a Grand Slam. He expressed satisfaction with his performance level, particularly finishing the match relatively early. "I want to give myself the chance to win all the matches here," he stated. While he acknowledged a "small dip" in his game during the match, he felt good overall and was pleased to avoid a later finish.
