10 apps students, teachers and parents should know

With a new school year approaching, the Jamaica Observer has compiled a list of apps and online services aimed at students, teachers and parents.

For college students, Notion offers a digital workspace for notes, tasks and databases. Anki uses algorithm-based flashcards and spaced repetition, with the app particularly popular among medical students.

The list recommends Lightbot for teenagers learning basic programming through a game in which users guide a robot to activate light tiles. Focus Tree uses a game-like digital garden to help students block social media during study periods, create flashcards and take quizzes. Users can also join shared gardens and track group study streaks.

For younger children, ABC Mouse offers educational activities and quizzes without third-party advertisements. It targets children aged two to eight, with a free tier offering up to 10 activities a day. Khan Academy Kids provides free, user-paced courses with quizzes, animated characters and interactive activities.

Teachers can use Kahoot! to create class quizzes accessed through PINs or QR codes, with students ranked by speed and accuracy. Nearpod aims to make lessons more interactive by allowing teachers to add quizzes, polls, matching exercises and digital boards to slides.
