11 artists look beyond the Himalayan landscape at Takpa Gallery

Takpa Gallery in Lazimpat is hosting 'Voices from the Himalayas,' an exhibition that moves beyond the traditional depiction of the Himalayan mountains. Eleven artists are showcasing their work, using painting and mixed media to explore the region as a landscape of memory, identity, and change.

The artists delve into the lives, traditions, and evolving identities shaped by the Himalayas. Chering Gyalpo Gurung, from Dolpa, examines the changing cultural landscape, focusing on how migration and modernization affect traditional practices. Wang Lama, born in Humla, documents Himalayan flora, fauna, and daily life, addressing the erosion of cultural and environmental heritage due to globalization and climate change.

Other artists connect the Himalayas to themes of displacement and identity. Tibetan artist Tenzin Gyurmey blends traditional Tibetan drawing with contemporary subjects, reflecting on cultural, political, and environmental shifts. Sahil Bhopal incorporates traditional Thangka painting into his contemporary work, while Tenzin Melak's multidisciplinary art explores identity, Buddhist philosophy, and the Tibetan exile experience.

Collectively, these artists portray the Himalayas not as a static vista but as a region in constant flux. 'Voices from the Himalayas' emphasizes how the region's narratives extend far beyond its geography, reflecting the continuous evolution of its voices.
