110,000 Liters of Hydrocarbon Fuel Seized in Guanajuato; Fuel Odor Led to Discovery

Police in Abasolo, Guanajuato, Mexico, uncovered a significant quantity of hydrocarbon fuel following a tip-off about a strong gasoline odor. State security forces were patrolling the community of San José de los González when they noticed an apparently abandoned truck and containers scattered across a property, all emitting a potent fuel smell.

Upon investigation, officers found that some containers were leaking gasoline, posing a risk to the local community and passersby. In total, they secured a 2019 model tanker truck filled with fuel and ten additional containers, each holding 10,000 liters. The total amount of seized hydrocarbon fuel reached approximately 110,000 liters.

Elements of the Public Security Forces were conducting preventive patrols when they noticed that the truck was apparently abandoned and there were scattered containers on the property, from which a strong fuel odor emanated.

The seized truck and the containers filled with fuel have been transferred to the Attorney General's Office of the Republic. Authorities will conduct an investigation to determine if the discovered materials are linked to illicit activities, such as illegal fuel siphoning, a common issue in Mexico.

This seizure is part of a broader effort by state authorities to combat fuel theft. Since September 2023, the state of Guanajuato has reportedly seized over 6.7 million liters of hydrocarbons and derivatives, valued at more than 162 million pesos, and disabled 62 clandestine tapping points across various municipalities.

Some containers presented gasoline leaks and therefore represented a risk to the inhabitants of the community and to people who were passing through the area.
