14 years in prison: Former head of Kok-boru Federation sentenced

The Chuy Regional Court has delivered a significant verdict, sentencing Talas Begaliev, the former president of the Kok-Boru Federation of Kyrgyzstan, to 14 years in prison. This stern judgment, which includes the confiscation of his assets, follows his conviction on multiple serious charges under the Criminal Code. Begaliev was found guilty of extortion, participating in a criminal community, financing an organized group, and the legalization of criminal proceeds, marking a major victory for law enforcement in their fight against organized crime.

Begaliev's downfall stems from allegations made by the State Committee for National Security in May 2025, which detailed his alleged connections to criminal elements. Investigations revealed that he served as a 'wakilan ata' (a form of patron or representative) for the notorious criminal figure Chingiz Jumagulov, also known as 'Doo,' who died in pre-trial detention in 2022. The prosecution presented evidence suggesting that Begaliev, in collusion with members of an organized group, orchestrated the illegal acquisition of approximately 2 hectares of land in the village of Kara-Jygach, Alamedin district. The estimated value of this land is around $2 million, and it was subsequently re-registered under the names of his relatives.

The sentencing of Begaliev sends a clear message about the consequences of engaging in criminal activities, even for those in positions of influence within sports federations.
