15-year-old boy drowns in Jigawa pond

A tragic drowning incident in Jigawa State, Nigeria, has reignited concerns about the dangers of water-filled ponds during the rainy season. Isah Muhammad, a 15-year-old resident of Bokoto Quarters in Dutse, drowned in a pond known as Sterling Pond along Disina Road on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at about 4:30pm, when the command received a distress call concerning the drowning of the teenager.

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa State, ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, confirmed the incident. He stated that the command received a distress call and dispatched personnel who evacuated the teenager from the pond. Despite efforts to provide medical attention at the General Hospital, Dutse, a medical doctor confirmed Muhammad had died before or upon arrival.

The operatives evacuated the victim from the pond and rushed him to the General Hospital, Dutse, for medical attention.

Residents in the area have expressed deep worry over the recurring danger posed by these water bodies. Abdullahi Sani, a local resident, noted that the increased water volume during the rainy season makes these ponds particularly hazardous, especially for young people. Musa Nalayi echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for greater public awareness and caution, particularly for parents, to prevent children from approaching dangerous ponds.

The Jigawa State Commandant of the NSCDC, Commandant Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, extended his condolences to the bereaved family, describing the loss as irreparable and praying for divine solace.
