174 Inmates Transferred from Overcrowded Mixquiahuala Prison to Tula

A significant transfer of 174 male inmates occurred from the Mixquiahuala, Hidalgo correctional facility to the Tula prison. The operation was necessitated by severe overcrowding and the deteriorating physical state of the Mixquiahuala facility, which was designed to hold only 70 individuals but housed 191. Structural problems, including water leaks in the dormitories, prompted a recommendation from Civil Protection for reinforcement and remodeling.

The relocation involved an inter-institutional police operation. Only 17 inmates remain at the Mixquiahuala facility, while the majority were moved to the new dormitory module at the Tula correctional center. This move highlights the persistent challenge of prison overcrowding within the state of Hidalgo.

Governor Julio Menchaca acknowledged the issue, stating that the construction of a new correctional facility in a strategic location is under consideration. The project aims to ensure adequate infrastructure, security, and proximity for the families of incarcerated individuals. The governor indicated that a project is already in development for this new facility.
