18-year-old faces trial for fatal collision after police chase

A trial commences Tuesday at the Hamburg Regional Court for an 18-year-old facing charges related to a fatal head-on collision that occurred six months ago. The incident followed a dangerous police chase through the city.

Prosecutors allege that on the morning of January 31, the young man was driving without a license and under the influence of drugs. When a police patrol noticed him, he allegedly ignored all signals to stop and accelerated, driving at excessive speeds and engaging in risky maneuvers that endangered other motorists. The collision occurred on Kennedy Bridge.

The defendant is accused of overtaking another vehicle and crashing into an oncoming transporter. He and his 35-year-old passenger sustained life-threatening injuries; the passenger later died following emergency surgery. The 28-year-old driver of the transporter suffered minor injuries but reportedly suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The prosecution contends that the 18-year-old was aware his driving could cause severe accidents and accepted the risk of a fatal outcome. The charges include attempted murder, stemming from the collision with the transporter, and illegal vehicle racing resulting in death. German law allows for a conviction as a murderer in such reckless driving cases under specific circumstances, as established by the Federal Court of Justice in 2019. Given the defendant's age as a young adult, parts of the trial may be held behind closed doors.
