Shock calls: 79-year-old outsmarts scammers – again

A 79-year-old man from Upper Bavaria has once again proven instrumental in law enforcement's efforts against fraudsters, marking his fourth successful contribution to the arrest of scam artists. The retired man, Bruno Schmaus, recounted his latest encounter during a police press conference.

Schmaus received a distressing "shock call" on Monday from someone claiming to be his son, who was allegedly crying and in trouble. The caller, and subsequently a purported police officer who took over the phone, demanded 80,000 euros in bail money. They claimed the son had caused a fatal traffic accident and faced imprisonment if the bail was not paid.

However, Schmaus recognized the scam immediately. Instead of succumbing to the pressure, he decided to play along, stalling the callers. His quick thinking allowed police to set up an operation and arrest a 21-year-old courier who arrived to collect the fictitious bail money in Pullach, near Munich.

"I really gave it full throttle with the theater," Schmaus said with a smile, acknowledging the psychological pressure the scammers applied. Markus Nothelfer, deputy head of the Munich police unit responsible for call center fraud, noted that participating in such scams is challenging, requiring knowledge and attention to detail to avoid detection. He advised the public to hang up and report such calls due to the intense psychological tactics employed by professional criminal gangs.
